IB Group 2 · Language Acquisition

Language acquisition

2020 syllabus · Language B & ab initio

One subject covering both group 2 courses. Five prescribed themes, three categories of text and five conceptual understandings are shared; almost everything else — prescribed topics, word counts, oral stimulus, markbands — differs between language B and language ab initio. Choose your course and your language and the syllabus below narrows to exactly what you sit, with a map of your own coursebook at the end.

A. A The course

Everything the IB prescribes, the two courses, the five themes, texts, concepts, the three components and the markbands.

LAA.1 — The two courses

Language B and language ab initio — Two group 2 courses. Language B is SL and HL; ab initio is SL only, for beginners.
The five prescribed themes — Identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organization, sharing the planet.
Optional recommended topics: language B — Under each theme the guide lists indicative topics. They are NOT prescribed.
Prescribed topics: language ab initio — Four topics per theme, twenty in all, and they MUST be addressed.

LAA.2 — Texts and concepts

The three categories of text — Personal, professional and mass media, defined by audience and relationship, not format.
Text types: language B — The guide's examples for each category. Neither prescriptive nor exhaustive.
Text types: language ab initio — A longer, more everyday list, including short functional texts a beginner can produce.
The five conceptual understandings — Audience, context, purpose, meaning, variation, marked directly by paper 1 criterion C.

LAA.3 — The assessment

The three components — Paper 1 is 25%, paper 2 is 50%, the individual oral is 25%, in every course, at every level.
Paper 1: writing — What the writing task is, in each course.
Paper 2: listening and reading — Three audio passages and three written texts, in two separately timed sections.
The individual oral — Supervised preparation, a presentation, a follow-up discussion, and a general discussion.
